After growing up in Thomasville, AL, and graduating from Troy State University, he began his career in 1988 at the Claude Peteet Mariculture Center in Gulf Shores. During his 25-year career with Alabama Marine Resources Division, he worked closely with Alabama's coastal fishermen, focusing on fisheries research, spawning Red Snapper and Speckled Trout, and enhancing artificial reef habitats. He developed a catch-and-release program for individuals with limited fishing access and provided tours and educational outreach on coastal resources.
After retiring, he launched a successful second career as an inshore fishing guide, fishing full-time from March through November. He works offshore as a First Mate on occasion with Captain Johnny Greene aboard the Intimidator, targeting red snapper, amberjack, grouper, and tuna. Learn more at fishorangebeach.com.
He and his wife, Vicky have three children; Kelley, Grady, and Mary Katherine, along with one granddaughter, Ruthie! Outside of fishing season, he hunts Specklebelly geese and ducks in the Mississippi Delta. A semi-retired competitive duck caller, he placed 3rd in the 2003 World Championship in Stuttgart, AR, using custom calls by his friend David Gaston, gastoncustomcalls.com.
